...Your Key to Professional Exellence
ESP Professional Development Awards
In 2008, ESP Lambda Chapter worked with the other CCE educator associations and extension administration to initiate a professional development small grants program using funds generated by Association of Cornell Cooperative Extension Employees (ACCEE) conferences. Support was provided to a wide variety of activities. Here are some reports from funded efforts.
What is Expected of Extension in an Agricultural Crisis or Emergency?
In the event of a local or regional agricultural crisis, Extension educators can serve a critical role in preparedness, response, and recovery efforts. The NYS Association of County Agriculture Agents - Western District teamed up with the NY Extension Disaster Education Network to host a statewide professional development conference entitled “What is Expected of Extension in an Agricultural Crisis or Emergency?” on April 30, 2009 in Geneva, NY. 2009 National Extension Conference on Volunteerism
The 2009 National Extension Conference on Volunteerism, held in Kentucky, was an educational experience that provided participants with information on the many different component of working with volunteers. Three horticulture educators working with the statewide Master Gardeners steering group received partial support for attending. In many ways, working with volunteers is like supervising staff but in other ways it is vastly different. The conference helped participants learn how to better create a safe environment for their volunteers through risk management, recruit and retain volunteers of all generations, keep better track of the time volunteers are donating, and much more. The information learned at the conference was helpful to several of the Cornell Cooperative Extension attendees when they took their examinations in May to become Certified in Volunteer Administration. In addition the horticulture educators and 4-H educators are currently working together to help create a stronger volunteer program within Cornell Cooperative Extension. The money provided to these educators will ultimately help CCE strengthen their volunteer programs.
Food Preservation Educator Training
CCE in Saratoga and Oneida Counties both contracted with CCE Monroe County for 3 day Master Food Preserver Trainings. The training in Saratoga County on May 13-15 included 13 CCE educators from Fulton/Montgomery, Greene, Rensselaer, Saratoga and Schoharie counties.
In Oneida County on June 15-17 twenty-one CCE educators from Albany, Chenango, Cortland, Fulton/Montgomery, Madison, Oneida, and Sullivan counties received the training. All together 34 educators from eleven CCE associations gained knowledge and skills through hands-on training in how to teach food preservation in their counties. The trainings were conducted by Judy Price and Katherine Humphrey, retired CCE educators and Master Food Preservers. Click here for full report. Click here for photos.
