Title: Website Administrator (half time, 1
year renewable)
Location: Northeastern IPM Center
General Description
Oversee the functionality of the
Northeastern IPM Center's website, which educates people about integrated pest
management (IPM). Support the Center and the region by enhancing site usability
and navigation, improving design, and editing and updating content. Implement a
content management system and assist staff in using it. Manage conversion of
databases to new formats and migration of the website to a new server.
The website administrator links the Center to campus-based and off-campus I.T.,
bridging it technologically and philosophically to other IPM Centers and
related programs. Some of the website administrator's duties will be to
- help create a vision for the website, working with
staff to plan and implement strategies that will fulfill our
communications goals;
- coordinate staff in a systematic approach to following
through on plans for website improvements and maintenance; enhance site
content by coordinating contributions from staff (request new material,
guide placement of and upload new content);
- focus on the improvement of and maintenance of the
site; encourage staff to rethink the structure and navigation of the
existing site, with an eye toward serving our audiences;
- redesign web pages and design new ones as necessary,
with attention to visual appeal, accessibility, and functionality;
- appropriately use templates, cascading style sheets, header
tags, page titles, and related elements; organize server folders; address
website security and access
- write queries for database-driven portions of the
website;
- improve metadata and code documentation on the website;
- assist with the Center's online grant proposal/project
management system (install updates; customize searches; troubleshoot);
- apply search engine optimization principles to help
raise the profile of the website and enable audiences to find pertinent
content more easily;
- track, analyze, and report on website statistics, using
them to guide priorities and evaluate progress toward goals;
- outsource complex programming work; monitor the
progress, service agreements, and invoices;
- serve as backup to CALS I.T. to keep computing hardware
and software up-to-date;
- work with campus I.T. experts to keep the local network
operating (printing and, if necessary, file-sharing)
- participate in the Regional IPM Centers' I.T. group;
network appropriately; share information.
- function as a team member; participate in Center staff
meetings and Advisory Council meetings as appropriate.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent background with 1-2
years relevant experience in information technology, especially developing
web-based applications and creating web pages.
- Knowledge of Cold Fusion, Javascript, HTML, and user
interfaces;
- Familiarity with database construction and queries;
- Project management skills; an ability to learn a site,
coordinate staff contributions, monitor progress.
- Demonstrated ability to use software, learn technical
material quickly, and share this information.
- Skills in problem solving, critical thinking, and
attention to detail.
- Excellent oral and written communication, with an
ability to translate science into easily understood phrases.
- Eagerness to interact on a team with a common goal.
- Graphic design and interface design experience or
coursework.
