Program Family Position Description

 

Working Title:                                                Field Crops Educator

Primary Roles and Accountabilities.

 

Responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating high quality educational programs in field crops & agricultural environmental management issues.   In conjunction with the Executive Director/Team Coordinator, promote program objectives and plans within assigned area of responsibility. Represent Cornell Cooperative Extension to the public, community leaders, government officials, and Cornell University. Subject to the coordinating influences of the Executive Director/Team Coordinator and association program committee, provide leadership in developing and implementing appropriate program responsibilities, including organizational responsibilities and leadership development.  Provide recommendations, advice, and education in subject matter areas.  Work as a team member to address local, regional, and statewide programming priorities.  Assist Cornell faculty with applied research in appropriate areas. This position may include multi-county responsibilities.

 

Program Management and Coordination Accountabilities (5%)

       Ensure that the program direction and related activities are coordinated within the overall plan-of-work and are within the mission of Cornell Cooperative Extension.

       Coordinate/conduct educational efforts for agri-business in response to emerging issues.

       Assist in drawing upon Cornell program resources in order to address identified clientele needs and to select program materials.

       Participate in multi-disciplinary team efforts to address priority issues.

       Respond to requests from community media representatives for information about assigned subject matter areas, and refer other questions to Executive Director, Team Coordinator or appropriate person.

 

Subject Matter Resource and Program Delivery Accountabilities (80%)

       Plan and deliver short- and long- range educational programs within the assigned subject matter area such as principles of field crops production & on-farm application.  Programs must address current issues and may include: crop production, integrated crop management, forage production, ecologically safe pesticide use, nutrient & manure management, crop rotation, weed & pest management, crop record keeping, soil fertility, efficient fertilizer use, forage quality.

       Plan and deliver short- and long-range educational programs within the assigned subject matter area of consumer horticulture.

       Serve as an educational resource to producers, government agencies, agri-business associations, and youth groups.

       Identify program needs through Cornell University, supervisor, program committees, and clientele.

       Ensure that the program direction and related activities are coordinated within the overall plan-of-work and are within the mission of Cornell Cooperative Extension.

       Coordinate/conduct educational efforts for agri-business in response to emerging issues.

       Assist in drawing upon Cornell program resources in order to address identified clientele needs and to select program materials.

       Work in concert with other team members to develop a “whole farm” approach to problem solving when appropriate.

       Provide leadership in the design, evaluation, and analysis of Field Crops programs and make recommendations for change in emphasis and/or improvement.

       Assist in evaluation and analysis of major programs and assist in making recommendations for improvement.

       Monitor program to ensure that educational content conforms to policies and objectives of the Association & Cornell and is research & knowledge based.

       Address agricultural engineering (machinery) inquiries on as needed basis.

       Collaborate with Agriculture Program Committee to plan and deliver program as appropriate.

       Assist in seeking out, preparing and submitting proposals to secure additional funding in conjunction with other staff.

 

Research and Program Evaluation Accountabilities (10%)

       Assist in the preparation and communication of reports that show the impact of programs to funders, appropriate committees, clientele and Cornell faculty.

       Communicate evaluation results.

       Conduct relevant research in county to provide in county data for pertinent issues in regards to field crop and environment management issues.

 

Professional Improvement (5%)

In cooperation with supervisor, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address change in programming and association priorities.

Contacts (level of interaction and outcomes)

Attend program committee, board and outside stakeholder meetings to stay abreast and ascertain changes and needs relevant to association program. Participate in program committee and outside stakeholder meetings to convey resources and capabilities of the association in light of their priority issues. Actively represent the association on statewide Program Work Teams to ensure connections that will enable increased capabilities to address local and regional efforts and priorities.  Represent the association to funding agencies and grant sources to negotiate and develop new sources of revenue and opportunities to meet program priority and clientele needs. Interact directly with, and seek the resource expertise of, faculty and other subject matter experts to address identified needs and to address complex issues.

Reporting Relationships and Type of Supervision Received/Given

Performs accountabilities under direct supervision of Agriculture Team Coordinator, deferring and seeking input in non-routine or complex subject matter situations as a developmental process.  As a subject matter expert, independently identify clientele and select appropriate subject matter relative to analyzed needs, alerting supervisor of issues and concerns as well as actual or potential areas of risk or conflict.

 

Degree and Experience Pre-requisites

Masters Degree from an accredited four-year institution with a major in agronomy or a closely related field.

 

Competencies

 

Necessary:

       Willingness to accept a flexible work schedule, including weekends and evenings. 

       Access to transportation adequate to fulfill position responsibilities.  Mileage is reimbursed in accordance with the travel policies of Cooperative Extension Association of Lewis County.

       Ability to communicate effectively using traditional educational tools as well as functionally computer literate with Microsoft Office and the Internet.

       Demonstrated ability to work as a team member.

       Demonstrated experience relevant to the role of the position.

       Demonstrated ability to involve appropriate people and committees in determining program direction.

       Demonstrated human relation skills to relate effectively to co-workers, advisors, clientele groups, and community & professional leaders.

       Must possess or be able to obtain a NYS Pesticide Applicator’s License and may be asked to become a Certified Whole Farm Planner and/or obtain a Certified Crop Advisor Certificate.

 

 

Desirable:

       Ability to initiate, plan, implement, teach, and evaluate educational programs that address the needs of diverse audiences.

       Four or more years of progressive experience in agronomy or agribusiness related to agronomy, and experience in northeast dairy industry. Farm background desirable.

       Ability to identify and utilize a variety of program delivery methods to reach individuals and groups.

       Ability to understand, interpret, and communicate complex issues.

       Desirable to have background and/or skills in areas such as marketing and grant writing.
