Title: Dairy/Livestock Resource Educator/Planner
Location: Cornell Cooperative Extension, Delaware
County, Hamden, NY
General Responsibilities
Responsible for providing leadership in the planning, implementation and evaluation of innovative educational programs in the discipline of Dairy/Livestock Management, including but not limited to innovative educational programs in the disciplines of Dairy/Livestock Management, including herd health management (especially calves) and pathogen management for the agricultural community of the New York City Cat/Del Watershed Region. Assist in representing the association to the public, community leaders, government officials and Cornell University. Programmatic responsibilities will be devoted to Whole Farm Planning and Dairy/Livestock Management educational programs related to the WAC Watershed Agricultural Program, and to Association organizational responsibilities.
The position will focus
on deliverables specified in the WAC/CCEDC Contract 346, Appendix A and
potentially succeeding contracts. The
position will serve as the Dairy/Livestock Management Specialist resource to
the Watershed Agricultural Program under the direction of the CCEDC Association
Executive Director and Watershed Agricultural Extension Team Leader. The position may work with faculty, under
agreements with the Delaware County Association, on Dairy/Livestock enterprise
applied research. Other duties as
assigned.
Responsibilities
and Essential Functions:
Program
Development
(15%)
¨
Provide subject matter
expertise to Watershed Agriculture Program.
¨
Identify local
agriculture program needs with the CCEDC Agriculture Issues Committee, WAC Watershed
Agricultural Program Committee, advisory groups, agriculture clientele, and
agriculture program staff.
¨
Develop educational
strategies, working with Cornell faculty and the
Cornell Pro-Dairy Program.
¨
Develop educational
strategies in support of Dairy/Livestock Management elements of whole farm
plans. Seek program input from agricultural
clientele, Cornell faculty, the CCEDC Agriculture Issues Committee, CCEDC agricultural
program leadership, and partnering agencies and organizations.
¨
Working with
Agricultural Watershed Team Leader to ensure that program direction and related
activities are coordinated within the Association plan of work and are within
the mission of Cornell Cooperative Extension.
¨
Develop and enhance
relationships with appropriate agencies, organizations, industries and
community leaders.
¨
Participate in
Association multi-disciplinary team efforts to address priority issues where
resources allow, with the guidance of the Watershed Agricultural Extension Team
Leader.
¨
Develop strategies for
implementing programs that utilize a variety of proven educational
methodologies and that consider the diversity of the community where
appropriate.
Program
Management
(5%)
¨
Prepare reports on program
progress and accomplishments of association programming for local, state and
federal use.
¨
With the guidance of the
Agricultural Watershed Team Leader, seek out, prepare and submit proposals to
secure additional funding, actively involving Executive Director, CCEDC Agriculture
Issues Committee, the WAC Watershed Agricultural Program Committee, CCEDC Board
of Directors, Cornell faculty and Extension Administration.

Program
Implementation
(60%)
¨
Provide educational programming to
the agriculture community in the broad disciplines of Dairy/Livestock
Management.
¨
Collaborate with Extension Faculty on applied
research projects related to Dairy/Livestock Management research project.
¨
Develop networks of volunteers
and/or professionals and nonprofessionals to extend program implementation
efforts, where appropriate and feasible.
¨
Serves as a Dairy/Livestock
Management resource to staff, and clientele including agencies, and other
organizations.
¨
Provide counsel, training and
support to Extension Educators within the association to foster the development
of confidence and competence in program processes.
¨
Shall develop materials and
provide leadership for improved performance of other staff in the area of
Dairy/Livestock Management.
¨
Shall provide training and
consultation in Dairy/Livestock Management for the development and completion
of Whole Farm Plans.
Program
Evaluation (15%)
¨
Analyze and evaluate
programs and make recommendations for change in emphasis and/or improvement to
the CCEDC Agriculture Issues Committee, the WAC Watershed Agricultural Program
Committee and appropriate Cornell faculty as necessary.
¨
Communicate evaluation
results, findings and recommendations to staff, CCEDC Agricultural Issue
committee, the WAC Watershed Agricultural Program Committee clientele and
Cornell University.
¨
Monitor assigned
programs to ensure that educational content conforms to the mission and plan of
work policies and objectives of the association(s) and Cornell University.
¨
Market program impact
to key stakeholders and funders.
¨
Communicate project
results and recommendations to CCEDC Watershed Agricultural Program
Staff, the CCEDC Agricultural Issues Committee, the
WAC Watershed Agricultural Program Committee, Cornell University, and other
policy and science groups, including, where appropriate, submission of research
papers to peer reviewed journals and conference presentations.
Staff
and Professional Improvement (5%)
¨
Jointly develop
learning plan as part of performance management in cooperation with supervisor,
to increase competency in position responsibilities.
¨
Support the
development of volunteer staff skills.
¨
Participate in
orientation programs appropriate to staff needs. Attend in-service education as appropriate relating
to Dairy/Livestock Management and other related subjects as needed.
¨ Serve as a program resource when possible for other extension staff.

Reports to and
receives supervision and guidance from the Watershed Agricultural Extension
Team Leader.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

At least two years
extensive experience and demonstrated knowledge in integrating the disciplines
of Dairy/Livestock Management with a variety of producers and situations.
¨
Experience with new
concepts or new technologies for Dairy/Livestock Management.
¨
Demonstrated
experience with or knowledge of agriculture/water quality issues.
¨
Experience with
inter-organizational teamwork.
¨
Demonstrated
understanding of the dynamic relationship of Dairy/Livestock Management, crop management
and business management.

Degree and Experience Requirements
¨
Master's of Science
Degree in Dairy and/or Animal Science appropriate to performing the
responsibilities of the position.
¨
At least two years of
progressively responsible experience in Cooperative Extension or equivalent
professional agricultural experience in education in an academic, or industry
setting related to Dairy/Livestock Management in the context of a variety of
producers and situations with Dairy/Livestock enterprises.
¨
Experience must
include two years interactive experience with agriculture producers.
Special Requirements
¨
Must be willing to
work nights and weekends as required.
¨ Must have access to transportation adequate to meet
position responsibilities
