The Community and Rural Development Institute (CaRDI) at Cornell University links
the resources of a research university to the needs of New York State communities.
The unique relationship between research and a commitment to strong and vibrant
communities is inspired by Cornell’s Land Grant Mission. That mission emphasizes
a university-community partnership that generates research addressing communities’
pressing needs. CaRDI facilitates and builds capacity for the generation and effective
transfer of that knowledge—within the University, from the University
to the communities of New York, and from the communities into the University.
Through this applied research process, model testing and tool development, CaRDI
emphasizes economic opportunity, environment and community, and community
capacity.

	CaRDI History

Since 1990, the Community and Rural Development Institute has strengthened Cornell's role as a leader in responding to current and emerging needs in community and rural development. Working with Cornell faculty and staff--including Cornell Cooperative Extension's network of county offices--and other state and regional institutions, CaRDI is a center of dialogue and collaboration addressing needs at the local, state, and national levels.

Our Mission

The Institute will benefit communities at the state, regional, and national levels, individual Cornell faculty, staff, and students, by accomplishing the following objectives:

Foster communication and collaboration among existing community and rural development research, extension, and teaching programs at Cornell, and monitor trends in community and rural development.

Serve as a point of entry to Cornell for policymakers, practitioners, and faculty and academic staff at other institutions interested in community and rural development.
